Biography

Matthew is Head of Smart Places at WSP. He focuses on designing and delivering digital real estate transformation and human-centred Internet of Things (IoT) technologies within the built environment. Matthew is a Chartered Engineer.

Matthew is a Fellow of the RSA a the IMechE’s Young Visionary 2016/17 for his work in creating The World’s Most Connected Building. He was a co-author in the Encyclopaedia of Sustainable Technologies.

Smart cities face a path of “big project” obstacles. Yet smart buildings offer a scalable foundation for creating the smart city. Buildings in cities serve different purposes (offices, apartments, hospitals, schools, residences etc). Across all uses, smart building infrastructure addresses the same needs as city infrastructure-- energy, water, trash, lighting, ventilation, connectivity, parking, security and emergency services. This session digs into the ecosystem of smart city to explain how smart building technology can push cities closer to their goal of a smart city.Smart cities face a path of “big project” obstacles.
